GAUDENSIUS

FROM THE HEROIC
WINEMAKING
OF ETNA

The Gaudensius line was born from the dream of creating a sparkling wine with the purest essence of Etna: Firriato’s Classic Method “Gaudensius” possesses the legendary intensity of the Volcano. Growing on the highest active volcano in Europe requires great sensitivity to the alternation of temperatures – at different altitudes – and to the diversity of the lava soils. These vineyards are capable of producing those valuable characteristics, giving life to a unique collection.

Etna’s terroir is different from any other. Its mesoclimate and sandy soils of volcanic origin, rich in many mineral elements, are ideal for the development of vines suitable for making sparkling wine. This is how the four Gaudensius Firriato are born, which bring together the pedoclimatic characteristics of Etna, the intensity of the aromas and the aromatic finesse which are enhanced with sparkling wine.

THE CURIOUS CASE OF CLASSIC METHOD SPARKLING WINE ON ETNA

In the history of Sicilian sparkling wine, not many people know that the first experiments date back to 1870 by Baron Felice Spitaleri of Muglia, with the first refermented wines obtained from Pinot Noir which someone renamed “Champagne Etna”.
But the first native classic method sparkling wines have a more recent history. After a period of oblivion, the vocation towards bubbles re-emerged shortly before the beginning of 1990, with a greater awareness of the minerality, acidity and character of high-altitude bubbles.
